The Artists Among Us

A Dancer and Two Photographers Walk Into An Office…

The Department of Medicine is, naturally enough, known for its prestigious medical breakthroughs, as well as its talented, innovative faculty and staff. But if someone were asked to make a list of all the words associated with the phrase “Stanford Department of Medicine” (“mission-driven” “high-quality care,” etc. etc.), “artistic talent” might not make the list.

Until now. The following three stories are just a fraction of the artistic talent lurking in the Department of Medicine: a photographer whose breathtaking nature shots cover everything from Japan to U.S. national parks, a dancer who’s won two ballroom competitions in the past year, and

another photographer whose annual calendar of gorgeous bird photography earns money for blood and marrow transplant patients. By (work)day, they’re known as Jason Gotlib, MD, MS, professor of hematology; Young Lee, finance and grants management specialist for Stanford Prevention Research Center (SPRC); and Wen-Kai Weng, MD, PhD, associate professor of blood and marrow transplantation. But outside of work? Well, they’re artists.
